Dan Friedman è un'artista nelle cui opere si fondono design e cultura. Nasce nell'Ohio e riceve la propria educazione al "Carnegie Institute of Technology" di Pittsburgh, all'"Institute of Design" ad Ulm, in Germania e alla "School of Design" a Basilea, Svizzera. Agli inizi degli anni '70, alla "Yale University" sviluppò e pubblicò una metodologia di insegnamento per il Design e per la "New Typography" che divennero le basi per la "New Wave" che seguì. Alla "State University" pose le basi per lo sviluppo delle Arti Visive. In qualità di disegnatore grafico ideò manifesti, pubblicazioni, "packaging" e "visual identity" per molte associazioni e organizzazioni. Tra questi particolare rilievo assumono le progettazioni effetuate a metà degli anni '70, in qualità di "Senior Design Director" presso l'Anspach Grossman Portugal Inc. Verso la fine degli anni '70 diviene socio della società inglese "Pentagram Design", contibuendo al consolidamento del loro ufficio a New York. La sua prima personale si tenne nel 1984 alla leggendaria "Fun Gallery". La "Neotu" a Parigi, e l'"Alchymia" a Milano hanno realizzato i suoi mobili sperimentali. I suoi lavori si trovano in molte collezioni pubbliche e private tra cui il "Museum of Modern Art" a New York, l'"Art Institute of Chicago", il "Gewerbemuseum" a Basilea, il "Virginia Museum of Fine Art" a Richmond, il "Seibu" a Tokyo e il "Musée des Arts Décoratifs" a Montreal. |
Dan Friedman is an artist whose subject deals with design and culture. He was born in Ohio and riceived his education at "Carnegie Institute of Technology" in Pittsburgh, the "Institute of Design" in Ulm, Germany, and the "School of Design" in Basel, Swizerland. In the early 1970's at "Yale University" he developed guide-lines for the first program in Visual Arts at the "State University" of New York in Purchase. As a graphic designer, he has created posters, publications, packaging and visual identities for many corporations and organizations including those done in the mid-1970's as Senior Design Director of "Anspach Grossman Portugal inc". In the late 1970's, he joined the British firm "Pentagram Design", became an Associate and helped establish their office in New York. The first solo exhibition was at legendary "Fun Gallery" in 1984. Both "Neotu" in Paris and "Alchymia" in Milan have produced his experimental furniture. His works is in many public and private collections including the "Meseum of Modern Art" in New York, the "Art Institute" in Chicago, the "Gewerbmuseum" in Basel, the "Virginia Museum of Fine Arts" in Richmond, "Seibu" in Tokyo and the "Musée des Arts Décoratifs" in Montreal. |
